Blepharoplasty is an aesthetic surgical procedure that corrects excess skin, fat, or muscle from the upper and lower eyelids, restoring a youthful and rested appearance. At Topmed Medical Center Târgu Mureș, our team of experienced aesthetic surgeons uses advanced techniques to deliver natural and long-lasting results, improving not only aesthetics but also, in some cases, eyelid function.
As we age, the skin around the eyes loses its elasticity, and fat deposits become more prominent, leading to unwanted features such as drooping eyelids and under-eye “bags.” Blepharoplasty corrects these issues and can be performed for both aesthetic and functional reasons.
Excess skin on the upper eyelids can affect vision and create a tired appearance. Blepharoplasty lifts and repositions the skin, providing a younger look and improving eyelid functionality.
Fat deposits in the lower eyelids can create “bags” under the eyes, giving a tired and aged look. Lower blepharoplasty removes these deposits and smooths the area under the eyes.
Excess skin on the upper and lower eyelids can lead to the formation of wrinkles and folds that affect the overall aesthetics of the face.
In some cases, blepharoplasty can help reduce the appearance of dark circles by removing the excess fat that contributes to them.
Designed to remove excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids, lifting the eyelid and improving both aesthetics and, in cases where drooping affects vision, visual function.
Performed to remove or redistribute under-eye “bags” by removing or repositioning fat and smoothing the skin for a more rested and youthful look.
In some cases, patients may benefit from a combined approach to rejuvenate both the upper and lower eyelids for a comprehensive enhancement of the eye area.
At Topmed Medical Center Târgu Mureș, the blepharoplasty procedure is personalized to the individual needs of each patient. The procedure generally lasts between 1 and 3 hours, depending on complexity, and can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, based on the patient's preference and the surgeon’s recommendation.
For upper blepharoplasty, the incision is placed in the natural crease of the upper eyelid so that the scar is nearly invisible after healing. For lower blepharoplasty, the incision can be placed just below the lash line or inside the eyelid, ensuring no visible external scar.
After making the incisions, the surgeon carefully removes excess skin, fat, and, if necessary, muscle, sculpting the eyelids for a smooth and rejuvenated appearance.
The incisions are closed with very fine sutures that are removed after a few days or are self-absorbing. Our advanced techniques ensure minimal scarring that becomes virtually invisible over time.
Immediate postoperative period: After the procedure, patients may experience swelling, bruising, and mild irritation around the eyes, but these symptoms gradually improve and typically resolve within 7–10 days. The doctor may prescribe special ointments and eye drops to keep the eyes hydrated and prevent infections.
Resuming daily activities: Most patients can resume light daily activities after 5–7 days, but it is recommended to avoid intense physical exertion and direct sun exposure for several weeks. Wearing sunglasses and protecting the eyes is important during recovery.
Scars: Post-blepharoplasty scars are usually very discreet and positioned in the natural folds of the eyelids, becoming nearly invisible as they heal. Following aftercare recommendations is essential for optimal results.
The results of blepharoplasty are visible immediately after the initial healing, but final results appear after a few months as swelling completely subsides and the skin adapts to its new shape. The benefits of blepharoplasty include:
Smoothed and lifted eyelids give the entire face a fresher, younger look.
If drooping eyelids were affecting vision, blepharoplasty enhances the functionality of the eyes.
Blepharoplasty delivers results that last for years, providing patients with an improved appearance over the long term.
