Peripheral arterial disease

Treatment for narrowing of leg arteries

peripheral arterial disease

What is peripheral arterial disease?

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a condition caused by the narrowing or blockage of arteries that carry blood to the limbs, especially the legs. This occurs as a result of the buildup of fats and other substances on the artery walls—a process known as atherosclerosis.

At Topmed Medical Center Târgu Mureș, we provide modern solutions for diagnosing and treating PAD, using state-of-the-art technology and a multidisciplinary approach to improve our patients’ quality of life.

Symptoms of peripheral arterial disease

Pain or cramps in the legs

These occur during walking or physical exertion and subside at rest (intermittent claudication).

Coldness or numbness in the legs

Caused by insufficient blood flow.

Slow-healing wounds

Ulcers or sores on the skin of the legs may indicate poor circulation.

Changes in skin color

The skin may become pale or bluish.

Hair loss and brittle nails

Occur on the affected limbs.

How do we diagnose peripheral arterial disease?

1. Doppler ultrasound

Used to assess blood flow and the degree of arterial narrowing.

2. CT or MR angiography

Provides detailed images of the arteries to identify blockages and plan treatment.

3. Ankle-brachial index test

Compares blood pressure in the legs with that in the arms to detect circulation problems.

Treatment options for PAD

1
Non-surgical treatments
  • Medication: To lower cholesterol, improve blood flow, and prevent blood clots.
  • Lifestyle changes: Quitting smoking, adopting a healthy diet, and exercising to stimulate circulation.
2
Minimally invasive interventions
  • Balloon angioplasty: Widening narrowed arteries using a catheter-mounted balloon.
  • Stent placement: A metal mesh device is placed in the artery to keep it open.
3
Surgical interventions
  • Arterial bypass: Redirecting blood flow through an artificial or natural vessel.
  • Thrombendarterectomy: Manual removal of atherosclerotic plaque from the artery.
