Gynecological procedure to remove affected tissue from the cervix

cervical conization

About Cervical Conization

Cervical conization, also known as cone biopsy, is a gynecological procedure in which a cone-shaped section of the cervix is removed. This tissue usually contains abnormal cells detected after a Pap test or colposcopy.

At Topmed Medical Center Târgu Mureș, we perform this intervention using modern, minimally invasive techniques to ensure our patients’ comfort and safety.

When is conization recommended?

1
Precancerous lesions

Presence of high-grade precancerous lesions (CIN 2 or CIN 3).

2
Abnormal results

On Pap test or colposcopy.

3
Suspicion of cervical cancer

When there are indications that lesions may be malignant.

4
Prevention of progression

Removal of the affected area to prevent transformation into cancer.

Types of Conization

1. Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP)
  • A commonly used method that removes the affected tissue with a thin electrically heated wire loop.
  • Fast and involves a short recovery time.
2. Classic surgical conization
  • Involves excising a portion of the cervix using a scalpel.
3. Laser conization
  • A highly precise technique that reduces the risk of bleeding.

Steps of the Procedure

1. Anesthesia

The patient is placed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the doctor’s recommendation.

2. Removal of affected tissue

The gynecologist removes the targeted area using a loop, scalpel, or laser.

3. Duration

The procedure usually takes 15–30 minutes.

Preparation for Conization

1. Medical tests

Complete blood tests, coagulation tests, and imaging if needed.

2. Hygiene recommendations

Avoid using tampons or intravaginal products 48 hours before the procedure.

3. Inform the doctor

Communicate all current medications and known allergies.

Recovery after Conization

Recovery is generally fast, and most patients return to daily activities within a few days.
