A renal biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure used to collect tissue samples from the kidney for diagnostic purposes. It is especially indicated in cases where renal masses are of uncertain nature and cannot be clearly diagnosed with imaging such as ultrasound or CT scans. The biopsy helps distinguish between benign and malignant tumors and guides further treatment decisions.
It is often recommended for patients under active surveillance (for example, older adults or those with multiple comorbidities) for whom major surgery would pose higher risks.
For diagnosis and pre-treatment planning, including before ablative procedures.
Patients at high surgical risk or with metastatic disease, where biopsy results optimize management.
The biopsy is performed under ultrasound or CT guidance (in our center, typically ultrasound) to precisely localize the renal lesion.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia (local protocol may also involve general anesthesia) to ensure comfort and optimal immobility during sampling.
A fine needle is advanced through the skin into the kidney to obtain core samples from the target area. Total duration is approximately 30–45 minutes.
After the biopsy, the patient is observed for a few hours to detect early complications (e.g., hematuria).
Temporarily stop blood thinners a few days before the procedure, as instructed by the treating physician.
Check coagulation (INR, APTT, platelets) and renal function before the procedure.
Maintain adequate fluid intake, as advised, to lower the risk of complications.
No large incisions; faster recovery and lower discomfort for the patient.
Essential histopathological information about the nature of renal tumors to select optimal therapy.
Post-procedure observation to prevent and identify complications early.
