Stereotactic radiotherapy is one of today’s most advanced radiotherapy techniques, now available at Topmed Medical Center Târgu Mureș. This treatment delivers high-dose radiation in a small number of sessions, focused extremely precisely on a well-defined area. This approach minimizes the risk of damage to surrounding healthy tissues and protects organs located near the tumor.
One of its major advantages is achieving maximum therapeutic effect in much less time compared to traditional radiotherapy. Stereotactic radiotherapy destroys the DNA of cancer cells, preventing them from dividing and leading to tumor shrinkage.
Used for treating tumors located in the brain or spine.
This type of treatment involves between one and five sessions and is used for small tumors in the chest, abdomen, or pelvis that cannot be surgically removed or are not effectively treated with conventional radiotherapy.
Stereotactic radiotherapy can be used both in early-stage and advanced (metastatic) cancers. It is also used for benign tumors that, although non-cancerous, can damage surrounding tissues.
Examples include vestibular schwannoma (acoustic neuroma) or pituitary adenomas.
It is important to note that not all patients are suitable for this treatment. Patient selection follows strict medical criteria and is assessed individually.
At Topmed Medical Center, a multidisciplinary medical board decides whether stereotactic radiotherapy is the best option. This process is fast and efficient, ensuring patients receive personalized treatment recommendations and prompt answers.
The patient undergoes a simulation session to determine the optimal body positioning and necessary immobilization methods. Immobilization is essential for precise alignment with the radiation beams.
Small marks are placed on the patient’s skin. For head treatments, a personalized mask is made, while for other areas such as chest or limbs, special templates are used to keep the area immobile.
In some cases, small gold markers are implanted near the tumor to guide the radiation beams precisely and increase accuracy, reducing the risk of damage to healthy tissues.
A CT scan and, if needed, MRI or PET are used to build a detailed treatment plan, defining the exact dose and beam combination for effective irradiation.
During these steps, the patient will not feel any difference compared to other radiotherapy methods such as IMRT or VMAT. For chest or abdominal lesions, special 4D CT simulation may be required for more precise targeting.
Stereotactic radiotherapy is typically an outpatient procedure, meaning no hospital stay is required after treatment.
Each session may last up to an hour, and patients generally tolerate this technique well.
One of the big advantages is that it involves fewer side effects than traditional radiotherapy, because the targeted area is well-defined and precisely aimed.
The most common side effect is temporary fatigue, which usually resolves within a few days.
Patients requiring hospitalization benefit from modern conditions, with rooms equipped with TV, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, private bathroom, and a nurse-call system for medical emergencies.
Care is provided by primary and specialist doctors, nurses, caregivers, and porters, ensuring constant monitoring and effective treatment.
Topmed Hospital is European accredited and has a contract with the Mureș Health Insurance House, offering continuous and day hospitalizations within available funding limits.
