Thrombectomy

Surgical procedure to remove blood clots from blood vessels

thrombectomy

About Thrombectomy

Thrombectomy is a medical procedure used to remove a blood clot (thrombus) from a blocked vessel, whether an artery or a vein. The goal is to restore normal blood flow to organs and tissues, thereby preventing severe complications such as heart attack, stroke, or tissue necrosis.

At Topmed Medical Center Târgu Mureș, thrombectomies are performed by experienced specialists using modern technology and minimally invasive methods to ensure optimal results and quick recovery.

When is thrombectomy indicated?

Acute arterial thrombosis

Blockage of an artery leading to ischemia, threatening the viability or function of a limb.

Pulmonary embolism

The clot travels to and blocks blood vessels in the lungs, requiring emergency intervention.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

Blockage of a deep vein, often in the lower limbs, which if untreated can lead to pulmonary embolism.

Ischemic stroke

Blockage of an artery in the brain that can result in loss of motor or cognitive functions, or even life-threatening situations.

Types of thrombectomy available

At Topmed Medical Center Târgu Mureș, we offer personalized solutions for each patient, using the most advanced techniques:

1
Minimally invasive thrombectomy
  • A thin catheter is inserted into the affected vessel, guided by advanced imaging.
  • The catheter can dissolve or remove the clot without a large incision.
  • Advantages: Faster recovery, less pain, and lower risk of complications.
2
Surgical thrombectomy
  • Used in severe cases where the clot is large or located in hard-to-reach areas.
  • The doctor makes an incision to directly access and remove the clot.
  • Indicated in emergencies or when other methods are ineffective.

How does the procedure work?

The process depends on the type of thrombectomy recommended and includes the following steps:

1. Patient preparation
  • Blood tests and imaging studies such as Doppler ultrasound, CT scan, or angiography are performed.
  • The type of anesthesia (local, regional, or general) depends on the complexity of the procedure.
2. The intervention
  • In minimally invasive procedures, a catheter is introduced through a small access point to aspirate, fragment, and remove the clot.
  • In surgical thrombectomy, an incision is made to directly access the vessel and manually remove the clot.
3. Monitoring
  • After the procedure, the patient is observed in the intensive care unit or a hospital room to prevent complications and assess the success of the intervention.

Recovery after thrombectomy

Hospital stay

Usually 1–3 days for minimally invasive procedures, while open surgical procedures may require a longer stay.

Resuming activities

Within a few days after minimally invasive techniques; several weeks for surgical procedures.

Additional treatment

Doctors may prescribe anticoagulant therapy to prevent new clot formation.
